Denmark faces escalating coastal flooding and storm surge risks, with projected sea-level rises threatening municipal infrastructure and community well-being. While conventional economic assessments evaluate tangible flood asset losses in Denmark, they systematically overlook the multidimensional challenges, and intangible suffering people experience during climate events. Understanding these human-centric impacts is vital for effective adaptation planning.
In this session, findings from recent research at DTU will be presented by Shreya Some, Postdoctoral Fellow, DTU, Department of Technology, Management and Economics, exploring a human-centred assessment of flood burdens through the lens of the Capability Approach (CA). The presentation will discuss the methodology of incorporating human related impacts in flood cost calculations.
Furthermore, the session will showcase a novel non-linear weighting method examining how pre-existing socio-demographic factors drive uneven flood cost burdens across Danish municipalities, particularly compounding risks for island communities. The session will highlight data-driven tools needed to move beyond uniform policy responses and target local interventions effectively.
The presentation will be followed by an interactive Q&A session.
Steffen Vestergaard from DNNK will be hosting this event.
